Illinois Powerball Player Wins the Billion-Dollar Jackpot
Champagne is popping in the Prairie State today, as an extremely fortuitous winner won the billion-dollar jackpot last night in Powerball.
The Powerball jackpot had been rolling over for the past few months, with no winner in sight since May 2nd, 2026. Now, the prize pool is back to $20 million again. It’s rather climactic that the moment that the billion mark is reached, the jackpot is won!
The Drawing
The August 12th drawing unveiled numbers 4, 26, 66, 67, 69, and the red Powerball 9. The unidentified winner managed to match all six numbers, an event that is less likely than being killed by a meteorite, due to the fact that the odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are as infinitesimal as 1 in 292.2 million.
The winner now has a, well, billion-dollar decision to make: whether to take the prize in annuity form or as a one-time cash lump sum. If they go for the annuity option, they will receive a partial payment of the total prize every year for thirty years. However, most winners go for the lump sum option.
This is not the first time that the Powerball jackpot has gone over a billion dollars. While it is the first time this has happened in 2026, the recently won jackpot is only the eighth largest Powerball jackpot ever, with a $2.04 billion prize having been awarded to the famous Edwin Castro in 2022.
Other Winners
Aside from the main outcome, this Powerball event created several substantial second-tier prize winners, and roughly 3.3 million smaller winners across the USA and UK.
The Power Play multiplier was X2, leading to one winner being awarded $2 million instead of $1 million. This winner purchased a ticket in Massachusetts, while four second-tier winners won $1 million each after buying tickets in Arizona, California, Florida, and North Carolina.
What’s Next for Powerball?
Once the jackpot is won, it resets to $20 million and will roll over every time it’s not won. Perhaps it will go even higher this time, or perhaps it will be won again in the near future.
