What is KY Powerball?
KY Powerball is a multi-state lottery draw format available in the state of Kentucky to play .
The format uses a 5/69 (white balls) format, plus a 1/26 (Powerball) to complete the matrix from which the winning numbers are drawn every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Tickets are priced at $2 per play and jackpots start at $20 million.
The odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 292,201,338.
In April 1992, Kentucky became one of 15 States to add Powerball to its lottery roster and participate in the first ever Kentucky Powerball draw. It is run on the State’s behalf by the Kentucky Lottery Corporation (KLC).
In November 2023, the Kentucky Lottery added the Double Play option to Powerball tickets. This feature gives players a chance to win a top cash prize worth $10 million.
Participants have 180 days to declare the winning Powerball KY ticket.
Who operates KY Powerball?
The Kentucky Lottery was established in 1988 after one million Kentucky residents voted on whether to introduce a state lottery.
The first tickets were sold by over 5,000 licensed retailers in April 1989 and just six months later, Louisville couple John and Pat Ackerman became Kentucky’s first lotto millionaires, winning the $42 million Powerball jackpot with the only ticket that matched all six numbers.
By 1991, The Kentucky Lottery became the fastest growing lottery in America and was the first Lottery in America to be implemented as a corporation.
By 1999 had over 155 staff members based at its Headquarters in Louisville, and across its regional offices in Lexington, Florence, Henderson, Prestonsburg, Bowling Green and Ashland.
Kentucky was one of 14 other states to take part in America's first ever Powerball draw.

Who was the first KY Powerball Winner?
The first person to win the KY Powerball jackpot was Brenda Knopp of Bloomfield, Kentucky on April 20, 1994. She won a jackpot of $64.2.
Have there been any unusual winners stories?
One Kentucky resident hit the powerball KY jackpot by selecting his numbers from a movie in which the main character used the same numbers to win the lottery in the film. Ironically, the winner went on to state he couldn’t even remember the name of the movie. He pocketed $2 million from his Powerball win.
Another unusual and sad Powerball winner story was that of David Lee Edwards of Ashland Kentucky. By the time he had won the Powerball jackpot he had been living rough and was a convicted felon. He won a $27 million jackpot and opted to take a one time payout.
He and his wife subsequently went on a spending spree, spent it all and were declared bankrupt by 2006.
Has there been a recent KY Powerball winner?
On November 5, 2022 and with the estimated jackpot sitting at $1.6 billion, four Kentucky players won big prizes, with two of them winning over $1million in jackpot amounts. One was sold in Benton and the other in Midway. The Benton player also added a Power Play option, multiplying his win to $2 million.
Where have winning KY Powerball tickets been sold?
Two KY Powerball winning numbers were sold in Five Star Food Marts, one in Shepherdsville, to Alva Osborne in 2003 and the other in Bardstown to the employees of Nukote International (known as the Nukote, 22) in 2007.
Also in 2007, another ticket was sold in Shepherdsville at a 44 quick stop store to Linville Lee Huff who won $33.6 million.
In December 2010, Muncie Meade bought a Powerball KY ticket with a $37.5 million jackpot in Louisville at a Thornton Oil store.
Have there been other notable Powerball winners in KY?
Notable Powerball winners in Kentucky are Rob and Tuesday Anderson, winning $128.6 million.
They found out they’d won the Powerball KY jackpot on Boxing Day 2009 having purchased the winning ticket from a Pro Travel Marathon store in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Another big winner was Kent Miller of Madison who won $89.3 million by matching all his KY Powerball numbers.
What about other lottery winners in KY?
On August 5, 2022 an anonymous man from Northern Kentucky won $1 million in a Mega Millions drawing.
