How Long You Have To Claim Prizes
Each state has its own deadline for claiming prizes, ranging from 90 days to 365 days after a drawing has taken place. Once this date has passed, a ticket for that drawing is no longer valid. It's therefore vital to check your entries within the claim period and come forward in time, otherwise you'll miss out on your money.
Missing the claim window happens more often than you might think. Some Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots have even gone unclaimed, along with thousands of other prizes every year.
The prize money that is not paid out is then given back to the individual lotteries that sold the tickets. Powerball and Mega Millions are called multi-state games and are played in many jurisdictions. The funds that each lottery contributed to the prize pool from its ticket sales are returned.
Each state has its own laws regarding what expired lottery winnings are earmarked for. Some lotteries use the money to hold special promotions such as second-chance drawings, while others will give them straight to good causes such as education.
