What is NC Powerball?

NC Powerball is a multi-state lottery game in which players select 5 numbers from 1 to 69 and then a further Powerball from 1 to 26. Tickets cost $2 and the Powerball Jackpot start at $20 million. 

The odds of selecting all 5 white balls and the red powerball are 1 in 292 million.

Who operates NC Powerball?

The North Carolina Education Lottery was founded in 2006 following a vote by residents in favor of a State Lottery in North Carolina.

At the time, it became one of the youngest lottery establishments in the United States.

Profits generated by the State Lottery are used to support educational programs from preschool through to college scholarships.

Who was the first NC lottery Powerball Winner?

A 38 year old woman from Halifax County became the first ever Powerball winner in North Carolina after she won $74.5 million on November 29, 2006. Jackie Alston bought the winning ticket from Shell Travel World. She stated that she chose the winning NC Powerball numbers based on the ages of her children. 


Have there been any unusual winners stories?

In June 2019 a winning Powerball NC ticket was sold to Charles W Jackson.

Not only was he the most recent Powerball winner in North Carolina, but he won the biggest jackpot in the state’s history, winning a huge $344.6 million prize.

The 66 year old retired store owner stated that he chose his NC Powerball winning numbers from a fortune cookie. He decided to take a lump sum of cash and pocketed a cool $223 million.


Has there been a recent winning NC Powerball ticket?

Following the November 2022 draw in which a lucky Californian resident won the £2.04 billion Powerball jackpot, the North Carolina Education Lottery said that there were also ten big wins in North Carolina alone, including a £1 million winner from Wilmington.

Other wins included a $100,000 ticket bought at the Walmart in Rocky Mount and eight further $50,000 winners.


Where in NC have winning powerball tickets been sold?

The first winning powerball North Carolina ticket was sold at Shell Travel World in Halifax County, North Carolina in November 2006.

A $564 Million split prize ticket was sold to Marie Holmes in Shallotte, North Carolina at Scothman on the 11th February 2015.

The most recent Powerball winning ticket in North Carolina was sold at Carlie C’s in Hope Mills to Charles W Jackson Jr who won $344.6 million.


Have there been other notable powerball winners in NC?

One of the most notable Powerball winning stories in North Carolina was when Marie Holmes won a $188 Million jackpot on February 11t, 2015. The single mother had recently quit jobs at Walmart and Mcdonalds so she could look after her children, one of whom had cerebral palsy. However, good fortune came her way when she bought a lottery ticket that matched all 6 numbers and won the $188 million Powerball jackpot.


What about other lottery winners in NC?

Another popular lottery in North Carolina is Mega Millions. One man from North Carolina bought a $2 Mega Millions SC ticket when he stopped at a convenience store to ‘give it a go’. He matched all five white balls (the odds of which happening are 1 in 12,607,306.25) and won a $1 million jackpot. He claimed his prize at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh, netting $710,000 after tax.
