What is Powerball SC?

Powerball SC is a multi-jurisdictional lottery game available to play in South Carolina and operated by the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Players pick 5 numbers from 1-69 for the white balls and a red powerball from 1-26. Players must match at least 3 out of 5 of the white balls in order to win a prize and are free to choose any number they wish.

Tickets for the base game cost $2 with a further $1 for the Power Play option to increase non-jackpot prizes.

The main Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million.

Who operates Powerball in South Carolina?

Powerball in South Carolina is run by the South Carolina Education Lottery. It was established after residents voted in favor of a State lottery in November 2001 with a 54 percent majority.

Since its establishment, South Carolina’s Education Lottery  has generated average annual revenues of over $300 million from ticket sales and unclaimed prizes.

The SCEL reported its second best ever results for FY22, generating over $2.25 billion in ticket sales. As a result, it has subsequently transferred over $550 million for educational purposes.

Who was the first winner of Powerball in South Carolina?

The first winners of Powerball in South Carolina were Anthony and Monica Wilson who won a stunning $88.7 million with a winning ticket bought in Fort Mills in 2007.. 

Anthony Wilson was said to have arrived at a Red Rocket Fireworks store in a limo to collect his winnings. Monica was previously working at Wells Fargo at Fort Mills and Anthony worked as a calibration technician in Columbia.

Have there been any unusual winners stories?

In June 2022, a South Carolina resident insisted he had a proven lottery strategy that he learned from a TV show.  After only 7 weeks, he matched all five white ball numbers on a single ticket to earn him a $50,000 win. This win was doubled to $100,000 after he'd spent an extra dollar on Power Play.

The lucky winner who preferred to remain anonymous said he previously had no idea how to play Powerball.

Has there been a recent winning SC Powerball ticket?

The last lottery SC Powerball jackpot win was almost 10 years ago on September 18th 2013. The anonymous winner bought the powerball winning ticket at a Murphy Oil US store in Lexington, South Carolina. The amount won was $399.4 million.

The first winning Powerball ticket sold in South Carolina was in May 2003 in Fort Mill. In the same year on New Year's Eve, Norman and Deanne Shue celebrated in style by winning $221.5 million in the Powerball jackpot.

Two winning tickets were sold in Columbia. One at a Raceway store in 2008 and the other at Murphy USA in 2009. 

In 2013, a winning Powerball ticket was sold at a Murphy USA Gasoline Station in Lexington, South Carolina.

Have there been other notable Powerball winners in SC?

On August 19 2009, Solomon Jackson Jr won the Powerball jackpot of $259.9 million and used much of his winnings to support schools and educational facilities within his local community.

What about other lottery winners in SC?
