Herman Kahan of Brooklyn won as part of the New York Lottery’s online Mega Millions subscription service, which he joined in 2021. The service is also available for NY Lotto and Cash 4 Life. Kahan was the only winner on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 after his ticket matched all the numbers drawn - white balls 7, 18, 38, 58, 64, and the Mega Ball, 24.

The jackpot was initially projected to be $126 million but excited players purchasing last-minute tickets drove the real total to $128 million. Kahan opted to receive his prize as a single lump sum of $52,559,839 after the required withholdings. Federal taxes take a 24% bite out of large lottery wins, while in the Big Apple, prizes are subject to the state tax of 8.82% and the city tax of 3.867%.

The deadline to claim lottery prizes in New York is one year from the winning draw date. Winners are technically not allowed to stay anonymous in the Empire State, although some have successfully claimed via a company to protect their privacy.

NYC Mega Millions ticket sales were $333,932,996 in fiscal year 2020-2021, and schools across the five boroughs benefited from $1,331,975,933 in Lottery Aid to Education support. Across the Empire State, education received $3.59 billion in Lottery dollars during the same period.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been won four times in 2022, most recently at $20 million on April 15 in Tennessee. In addition to the New York win, the top prize was also hit at $110 million in Minnesota on April 12, and $428 million in California on January 28. The California winner, Kristine Wellenstein, came forward earlier in June to claim her incredible prize.
