Extraordinary Powerball Draw Creates 91 Millionaires
One of the most remarkable Powerball draws in history took place on Wednesday, April 29, as two players split the jackpot and 89 more tickets matched all five main numbers. Let’s break down what happened and see if there’s a reason for the unusual result!
The jackpot had built up to $143.4 million after three weeks without a winner, so it was still relatively low by Powerball’s record-breaking standards. The winning numbers were revealed to be 3, 19, 35, 51 and 67, with a Powerball of 15. The Power Play multiplier was 2X.
Who Won The Jackpot?
The two jackpot-winning tickets were sold in Indiana and Kansas. For Indiana - the most successful state in Powerball - it was the 40th time that a Hoosier had landed the top prize. Kansas also has a great track record in the game, and this was the 13th jackpot win for the Sunflower State.
Both winners will receive $71.7 million (before taxes) if they take their share of the jackpot as an annuity, or they could opt for the cash lump sum of $32.6 million. The deadline for the lucky ticket holder from Indiana is 180 days from the draw date, while the player from Kansas has one year to claim their money.
What Happened in the Second Tier?
While it is surprising to have more than one jackpot winner, it does happen from time to time. The most extraordinary aspect of Wednesday’s result was what happened in the second prize tier.
There were 89 players who matched all five main numbers without the Powerball (for comparison, there had not been any in the previous two draws). For 27 of these winners who added the Power Play option, the $1 million payout was doubled to $2 million.
These big wins were celebrated across many of the participating Powerball jurisdictions, but a few states stood out. Indiana had 19 of the 89 wins, New Jersey 18 and Louisiana 11.
Looking at the numbers that were drawn, there’s not a simple sequence that would explain all the winners (if the numbers were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, for instance, it is likely that hundreds or maybe thousands of players would win). However, there is a subtle pattern to the numbers that might point to why there were so many winning Match 5 tickets.
The numbers are all 16 apart - 3 to 19, 19 to 35, 35 to 51, and 51 to 67. Taking 35 as the central number on the playslip (from the range of 1 to 69), it is possible that some players decided to spread out their number selections evenly from there. If it emerges that most of the winning tickets were manual picks rather than Quick Picks, it would suggest that players were using a particular strategy.
Considering that many of the winners were from the same state, it could also be individual players (or lottery pools) using a systemic approach. This involves entering multiple combinations, and perhaps playing the same five main numbers with a different Powerball.
In the meantime, the Powerball jackpot will reset to $20 million for the next draw on Saturday night, so many players may shift their focus to the $178 million Mega Millions draw on Friday. Keep an eye on both jackpots and make sure to take part if you want to give yourself a chance of winning.
