Missouri Powerball Winner Opts For $410.3 Million Lump Sum
The Missouri player who won half of the historic $1.787 billion Powerball jackpot has come forward to claim their money. The winner said he plans to ‘just do me for a year’ as he continues to come to terms with the life-changing turn of events.
The colossal payout dates back to the drawing on September 6, when the second-largest jackpot of all time was up for grabs following a run of 41 draws without a winner. Following a rush for tickets across the U.S., two participants matched all the numbers.
Half of the pot went to someone from Texas, while the other winning ticket was sold at QuikTrip, 12100 Lusher Road in St. Louis. It is the biggest lottery prize to have ever been won in Missouri, and the lucky player has now claimed his prize at the state’s lottery headquarters in Jefferson City.
He could have taken the annuity option of $893.5 million (pre-tax), but instead opted for the single lump-sum payment of $410.3 million before taxes.
The winner, who played a Quick Pick, decided to stay anonymous rather than let the Missouri Lottery disclose his identity. He still shared a few details about how he reacted to the win and what he intends to do next.
“I’m going to just do me for a year,” he said, adding that his wife will also reduce her workload so that they can spend more time together. “I’m like a homebody. The perfect day is sitting at home doing what I do – relaxing.”
The winner also joked that his wife would ‘drag him out of town now’, and added that it had been hard to get his head around his newfound wealth while continuing with everyday life. “I’m a millionaire, a multi-millionaire, and I’m doing laundry last night.”
Speaking about the sleepless nights he had endured between winning the jackpot and the day he made the trip to Jefferson City, he added: “It’s the best problem I’ve ever had.”
The Texas winner has yet to claim their prize, but there is a 180-day deadline in the Lone Star State so they have until next March to come forward.
The Powerball jackpot has already bounced back to more than $120 million since the win on September 6, while Mega Millions is approaching $500 million. Head out to a retailer to pick up a ticket for the next draw, or choose your numbers online if the option is available in your state.
