Powerball Jackpot Approaches $1 Billion Again
The Powerball jackpot has increased to $930 million after a 40th consecutive drawing without a winner. It is the seventh-largest prize in the game’s history.
More than three months have now passed since the jackpot was last won on September 6. On that day there were two winning tickets - one from Texas and one from Missouri - who ended up splitting $1.7 billion.
The jackpot has been steadily building since then, and the latest drawing on Monday, December 8 offered the chance to win $880 million. Nobody matched all the numbers - 8, 32, 52, 56 and 64, with Powerball 23. One player from Florida hit five of the numbers (just missing the Powerball) to win $1 million, while the 2x Power Play increased prize payouts for thousands of ticket holders.
The grand prize is now set to rise by $50 million ahead of Wednesday’s draw, leaving any prospective winner with a choice of whether to take the $930 million as an annuity or go with the cash lump sum of $429 million.
If the jackpot keeps rolling, it will push past the $1 billion mark within the next couple of draws. This is the point when ticket sales usually explode and the growth of the jackpot accelerates, sometimes jumping up by $100 million or more between draws.
It could climb quickly up the list of the biggest all-time jackpots over the holiday period, although there is still a long way to go before it reaches the No.1 spot. The largest win ever was worth $2.04 billion and went to Edwin Castro from California in November 2022.
It has been a year of big jackpots for both Powerball and Mega Millions. As well as the $1.7 billion Powerball payout in September, Mega Millions saw a $980 million win go to Georgia last month.
There was another Mega Millions win, worth $90 million, in New Jersey on December 2, so the main focus of attention at the moment is the enormous Powerball jackpot.
