Third-Largest Jackpot in Powerball’s History Is Up for Grabs
Saturday’s draw did not bring the grand prize to any Powerball player. The prize went up from approximately $750 million to $875 million. The jackpot hasn’t been won since April 19 and it rolled over 36 times so far.
On Wednesday, July 12 no one matched the winning numbers 23, 35, 45, 66, 67. The red Powerball number was 20 while the Power Play multiplier was 3X. Nevertheless, five numbers were matched by two players from Florida and Indiana who won $1 million each. The draw brought prizes to 1,880,532 winners and you could be one of them, so carefully check your ticket.
Whoever wins the jackpot on Saturday will enter Powerball's history with the third-largest prize. But who were the predecessors?
In January 2016, three ticket holders won the second-largest prize worth $1.58 billion. The winners were John and Lisa Robinson from Munford in Tennessee, David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith from Melbourne Beach in Florida, and Marvin and Mae Acosta from Chino Hills in California. They went for the cash option and shared $983.5 million.
In November 2022, only one ticket managed to match all the winning numbers. Edwin Castro from California won the biggest prize worth $2.04 billion and chose the cash option of $997.6 million.
A jackpot contest?
The Mega Millions jackpot has also been waiting to find its lucky winner as on Tuesday, July 11 it rolled over for the 24th time. The top prize hasn’t been won since April 18 and is now worth $560 million.
This jackpot is also in the top ten biggest Mega Millions prizes. Although not as big as the Powerball one, it currently occupies the sixth place. However, it’s still a long way until it could potentially surpass the biggest prize of $1.53 billion which was won in October 2018. The anonymous player from South Carolina took the cash option of $877.7 million.
