Although the Vermont Lottery has sold Powerball tickets since 2003, no one in the Green Mountain State has matched all six numbers to take home the jackpot until now. The winning numbers drawn on Wednesday, June 29 were white balls 8, 40, 49, 58, and 63, plus the Powerball, 14.

The winner purchased their ticket from the Middlebury Short Stop, a Jolley chain retailer in the state's west that's been selling Vermont Lottery tickets since 1993. The store will be paid a $30,000 bonus commission, the highest available, for selling the winning ticket.

"The Vermont Lottery is thrilled to have our first ever Powerball Jackpot winner in Vermont," said Andrew Collier, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Liquor and Lottery. "This is an exciting win for Vermont lottery players, the Education Fund, and the state."

The ticket-holder has 365 days from the draw date to claim their life-changing win. They will then have 60 days to choose between receiving their winnings as an annuity of $366.7 million, paid in 30 payments over 29 years, or a cash lump sum of  $208.5 million. Both options are before tax withholdings, including federal taxes of at least 24% and Vermont state taxes of 6%.

Although Vermont doesn’t technically allow lottery winners to stay anonymous, they are allowed to claim via a trust. The trust’s name is made public, allowing the winner to preserve their privacy. Otherwise, the winner’s name, town and prize amount won are public information.

The other big winner in last night's draw was a ticket in Illinois that hit the $1 million Powerball second prize by matching the five white ball numbers. There were more than 609,000 winners in total on Wednesday, so don't forget to check your tickets to see if you've hit a payout with one of the game's nine ways to win!

June 29 was the 27th draw in the jackpot run, after the top prize was previously won in Arizona at $473.1 million on April 27. The Powerball jackpot has gone off four times this year, and the largest prize of 2022 so far was won on January 5, when two tickets in California and Wisconsin split a $632.6 million jackpot – the seventh-largest in the game’s history.

There are now just five Powerball participating lotteries that have never won a jackpot - Maine, Mississippi, North Dakota, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Wyoming. Could the next winner come from one of these jurisdictions?

Next Powerball Draw is Saturday

Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday night at 10:59 PM EST in Tallahassee, Florida. The jackpot has now reset to its current starting $20 million starting value ahead of Saturday’s draw. Why not check out Smartpicks to inspire your numbers before you buy your ticket?
